Tips for Towing with Your Side by Side

 

While trucks and SUVs are most people’s first choice when it comes to towing things, these vehicles usually require paved roads to do their best work and can be somewhat cumbersome. Side by sides are built for off-road riding and have a lot of engine power, which makes them perfect for towing off the beaten trail. If you’re interested in using your side by side to tow things, this guide from Martin Marine Sales can help you get started.
 

Use the Right Side by Side Model

Some side by side models are better suited to towing things than others. Even UTVs that boast a lot of cargo capacity aren’t good for towing if they lack a towing hitch or brackets on the chassis. You should also check your owner’s manual to learn more about your side by side’s maximum towing capacity. Overburdening your UTV can result in serious damage to both you and the vehicle. 

 

Use the Correct Accessories

Your next step will be to find the right accessories. Make sure that you have a compatible hitch along with a selection of tie-downs or ratchet straps to better secure your cargo. A tow strap can also be useful if you think you’ll need to pull your UTV out of a ditch or tow debris out of the way. 

 

Plan Your Route

We recommend planning out your route and then riding through it on your empty UTV to get a better feel for the terrain. This will give you a chance to spot potential hazards. If you notice something that you’re not sure you’ll be able to overcome, replan your route to avoid it. Then do another trial run with your empty trailer attached to see if there are any places where it might not fit or might be in danger of tipping over.

 

Driving Tips

Distribute the weight in your trailer as evenly as possible to make towing easier. It’s also important that you fully secure your cargo before you set off.  Remember to take corners slowly and be extra careful when driving over difficult terrain. Finally, be careful when braking. While side by sides usually have good braking systems, the extra weight of your trailer can make things a bit more difficult.
