Side by Side Trail Riding Tips
Tearing up the trail in your side by side may be thrilling, but there’s always the possibility that you or someone else will become injured. Luckily, you can go a long way towards mitigating these risks by simply behaving responsibly. Here at Martin Marine Sales, customer safety is one of our top priorities, and that’s why our experts have prepared this list of side by side trail riding tips.
Stick to Designated Trails
Designated trails exist for a reason. Going off trail might seem like an adventurous and exciting thing to do, but in reality, it’s more likely that you’ll end up harming the environment. Side by sides can trample delicate vegetation and disturb wildlife. Going off-trail also increases the likelihood that you’ll encounter an obstacle that your UTV wasn’t built to overcome. If you’re lucky, your side by side will only get stuck or damaged, but if you’re unlucky, serious injuries can occur. It’s also important to note that going off-trail will result in a serious fine if you’re riding on state or federal land.
Safety Equipment
Everyone riding in your side by side should be equipped with the necessary safety gear, including you. This includes a helmet, goggles with anti-fog/UV protection, and full-length clothing to protect your skin. Always use equipment that is well-fitting and fully certified (for example, helmets should carry a sticker saying they are DOT certified).
Be Polite
Most people trail ride to enjoy themselves. By acting courteously, you can help ensure that other riders have just as good a time as you. Always give other riders the right of way and inform them of how many people are following behind you. Give them as much space as you safely can, and give other riders a quick warning if trail conditions are poor. If you notice other riders on the side of the trail, take a second to make sure they are just relaxing or taking a photo. If you discover that they’re in need of medical help or have experienced a mechanical failure, try to aid them as best you can.
