The Beginning of Polaris®

The story begins in 1945. World War II was at an end. Metal production was at an impressive high. A small company known as Hetteen Hoist & Derrick crafted unique machines for farmers. The nature of this work was seasonal and the men enjoyed outdoor adventures during the off-season. They enjoyed fishing and hunting, but wanted a more efficient way to travel large distances across the snow. Working together, they created their first snowmobile. This invention was intended for their use alone, but it caught the eye of others and they began crafting it for sale.

The Growth of Polaris®

The company got renamed Polaris® by 1960 and crafted different snowmobile models, which included sport options and work options. A quick and large boom in the market led to the need for more management skills and the company was sold to Textron. The market growth continued into the 70s, but the recession hit the industry and soon only three manufacturers in the market were left.

Success Out of Struggle

Textron wanted out and instructed the president of Polaris® to sell the company. Instead, he led a buyout and began rebuilding Polaris® with only 100 workers. They paid the Textron debt faster than expected and saw company growth. In 1984, the first ATV was added to the Polaris® powersports line. In 1990, the company became the first major United States powersports manufacturer to unveil a personal watercraft line.
