Like many other pastimes, riding an all-terrain vehicle (ATV, also called a quad or four-wheeler) has its own subculture, which in turn comes with its own jargon. If you want to understand what your fellow powersports fans are talking about on forums or at the off-road park, this guide will brief you on some of the most common ATV slang terms you’ll come across.

The Vehicle Itself

AATV: Standing for “amphibious all-terrain vehicle,” this is a special type of ATV that is designed to be able to ride through shallow water as well as rough terrain.

Aftermarket: Any part or accessory on an ATV that was purchased and installed after the vehicle left the factory.

Modified: An ATV that is no longer “factory” or “stock,” in that it’s been altered from its original condition with various enhancements or attachments.

OEM: Standing for “original equipment manufacturer,” this refers to a component on the ATV that was made by the vehicle’s manufacturer and not an aftermarket part.

Stock: An ATV that has its OEM parts and no aftermarket parts.

ATV Parts

Go Juice: A slang term for gasoline.

Knobbies: The main type of tire that most ATVs come with from the factory, featuring small rubber knobs that help the vehicle to maintain traction on challenging terrain.

Paperweight: Any quad that has been damaged behind all repair.

Skid Plates: Metal plates that protect the ATV’s undercarriage and suspension system from damage.

Riding Jargon

Goosing It: Applying the throttle in short bursts to get the ATV to “jump” forward.

Power Slide: A technique to rotate the rear end of an ATV by using only the throttle.

Rollover: When an ATV is tipped over or rolled onto its side.
